Privacy Policy

Last Updated: May 23, 2018

At Husband Help Haven LLC, we are committed to keeping your data safe, private, and only using your data in ways that are necessary by virtue of running an online business, or in ways that most people would reasonably expect and accept.

For example, when you submit your email to subscribe to Husband Help Haven’s email list, it should be no surprise that we use your email address to – *gasp* – send you emails about Husband Help Haven! The vast majority of Husband Help Haven’s data processing is similarly common sense.

Contact Information

Before we get into the details, if you have any questions about this privacy policy or if you have any requests regarding how your data is processed or stored, please contact the owner, Stephen Waldo, at support@husbandhelphaven.com.

Note from the owner: I have done my best to prepare this privacy policy using language that is easy to understand, and to organize the information in a way that is easy skim.

Vocabulary

A few keywords to know before we get into this:

PII: Stands for Personally Identifying Information, basically anything that can be used to identify you as a natural person. Not all data is personally identifying information.

Data processing: Any handling of data is considered data processing.

Lawful basis: Under GDPR, data processing can be justified under one of six lawful basis. Husband Help Haven’s data processing is justified under either consent, contract, or legitimate interests, depending on the purpose of the processing as described below.

User: Anyone who interacts with Husband Help Haven as a reader, subscriber or customer. This could include visiting our website, reading our content, subscribing to our email list, purchasing a product, or sends an email.

Understanding Legitimate Interests as a Lawful Basis For Processing

Legitimate Interests as a lawful basis for data processing basically means that we may process your personal data for carefully considered and specific commercial interests, individual interests or broader societal benefits.

When Husband Help Haven processes data under the basis of legitimate interests, we have carefully considered whether your data is being used in ways you would reasonably expect, with minimal privacy impact beyond data that you have willfully submitted, and with compelling justification for processing.

These purposes may include:

  • Where the processing enables us to enhance, modify, personalize or otherwise improve our services, communications and content for the benefit of our readers and customers.
  • To deliver email content that you would reasonably expect and want to receive, based on other data the user has provided or actions that the user has taken. For example, after purchasing a product, we may send you product updates under the basis of legitimate interests, even if you have not explicitly requested product updates.
  • To prevent identity fraud.
  • To enhance security of our website, network and information systems.
  • To better understand how people interact with our website.
  • To determine the effectiveness of promotional campaigns and advertising.

The way that we decide whether legitimate interests applies or not is based on a Legitimate Interests Assessment, which is a publicly available document that you are free to request at any time. Justification can include commercial interests, individual interests or broader societal benefits.

Our criteria for deciding whether a data process fits a legitimate interest or not is as follows:

  • Is Legitimate Interests the most appropriate lawful basis for data processing?
  • Does the processing enable us to enhance, personalize or improve our service to the user?
  • Is the processing necessary for the function of Husband Help Haven as a business?
  • Does the processing involve sensitive data? Husband Help Haven does not currently process sensitive data under the grounds of legitimate interests.
  • Would the user reasonably object to the processing?
  • Do the individual user’s rights and freedoms outweigh the legitimate interest? We will not process data or rely on legitimate interests when these interests are overridden by the individual user’s interests or fundamental rights.

Note that at any time, the user is free to object and/or be removed from processing under the grounds of legitimate interests. If you have questions, or if you would like to see one of our Legitimate Interest Assessments, please don’t hesitate to contact us at support@husbandhelphaven.com.

Privacy Policy Consent

Husband Help Haven has worked to make this Privacy Policy readily available on Husband Help Haven’s online properties, and we do our best to bring your attention to this Privacy Policy any time that you submit your data. If you continue to use our website, read our content, subscribe to our email list, buy our products, or request customer support, we reasonably assume that you have been informed how your data is used and your rights as a user.

Data Processing Purpose #2.
Email Marketing

Subscribers receive exclusive email-only resources and offers.

To date, over 30,000 users have subscribed to Husband Help Haven’s email list. Husband Help Haven uses email marketing to promote our free and paid content, products and services to users who willfully subscribe. Typically, a user will subscribe because they desire a specific incentive or resource that is exclusively available via email, such as the free email lessons sent out to subscribers.

Note that we may randomly split-test email content to determine what is most relevant and helpful to our subscribers.

Data Collected

Email marketing data we process includes, but is not limited to:

  • Name and email address
  • IP address and location (may be used to verify when a user believes they’ve been subscribed in error)
  • Emails opened and links clicked in those emails
  • Site usage
  • More detailed browsing data (see below)

We also collect more detailed browsing data from email subscribers. For example, after visiting a sales page a certain number of times, a subscriber may receive an email-exclusive offer for that particular product. This type of tracking and marketing is generally automated.

No sensitive or special personal data is stored or processed for email marketing purposes. Email marketing data is stored by a third-party processor, primarily ActiveCampaign, which we use to manage and send emails.

Third-Party Data Processors

  • ActiveCampaign

Please see our Cookies Policy for more information.

Lawful Basis

Lawful basis for email marketing data processing is two-fold.

First, the collection and storage of data is based on the lawful basis of consent, because the user willfully chooses to subscribe by submitting their email address.

The lawful basis for ongoing contact with users via email marketing is legitimate interests. Contact support@husbandhelphaven.com for our Legitimate Interests Assessment on our email marketing data processing.

Data Retention

Inactive subscribers (defined as subscribers who have not opened a Husband Help Haven email for a significant period of time) will be periodically deleted from our email system.

In addition, you may contact support@husbandhelphaven.com at any time to opt-out of email marketing, or to request to be added to our exclusion list so that it is impossible for you to ever receive emails from us.

Data Processing Purpose #3.
Retargeting Advertising

Your browsing data may be tracked via cookies and sent to a third-party platform (Google or Facebook) in order to show you relevant advertisements about Husband Help Haven content, services or products.

You’ve probably seen it before – as you browse a certain website, you may start seeing ads for that website’s content, products or services on other platforms such as Facebook. That is retargeting, and it is a common online advertising practice.

While Husband Help Haven understands that most users do not specifically enjoy advertisements, remember that exposure to advertisements online is inevitable. Retargeting makes it so that at least the ads you are being shown are relevant and potentially useful. In addition, they are considered an industry standard and serve as a core promotion strategy for many online businesses.

Note about GDPR: Husband Help Haven only shows advertises content and services via retargeting to users in North America, Canada and Australia. At this time, effort is taken to avoid showing retargeting advertisements to European citizens or users living in the European Union, except where legitimate interests apply.

Data Collected

Remember, we never sell your data, share your data, or use your data for advertising any content other than that produced or created by Husband Help Haven.

Data collected for the purpose of retargeting advertisements may include, but is not limited to:

  • Pages visited
  • Number of times user has visited Husband Help Haven web property
  • User’s relationship to Husband Help Haven – broadly defined as either reader, subscriber or buyer

Third-Party Data Processors

  • Facebook
  • Google

Please see our Cookie Policy for more information.

Automated Decision-Making About Retargeting Ads

What retargeting advertisements you may see will depend on your web browsing behavior. Generally speaking, the advertisements you see will reflect your current relationship with Husband Help Haven. A few key examples are listed below:

  • If our data shows that you are not a subscriber, you may be shown advertisements relating to our free blog content or exclusive email offers.
  • If our data shows that you are a subscriber, but not a buyer, you may be shown advertisements for relevant Husband Help Haven products or services.
  • If you are a buyer, you may be shown advertisements for other related products or services, or product updates.

Data Retention

Although it can vary from platform to platform, and depending on the user’s relationship to Husband Help Haven, general browsing data for the purposes of retargeting is retained for a period of 180 days. Subscriber and customer data retention may vary. In other words, after visiting a Husband Help Haven web property, you may continue seeing advertisements for Husband Help Haven content, products or services for a period of 180 days.

Lawful Basis

Legitimate interests. Paid advertising is a core marketing strategy of many online businesses (which helps make it an expected and normal part of online browsing), and no new data is collected or processed for the purpose of retargeting – only data which the user has already provided or which has been collected from the user for another purpose.

Contact support@husbandhelphaven.com to request our Legitimate Interests Assessment for retargeting advertisements.

About Our Advertising Exclusion Lists

Husband Help Haven makes an ongoing effort to exclude users who have withdrawn consent or objected to data processing. Note, however, that some amount of data storage is required to ensure complete exclusion from retargeting, e.g. your name and email address will be put on an exclusion list indefinitely to make sure you are never shown Husband Help Haven advertisements again.

Also note that Facebook advertisements targeted through methods other than retargeting are not under the control or provision of Husband Help Haven. In other words, it may be possible for the user to continue seeing Husband Help Haven ads that are targeted towards the user’s demographic, even if they have opted out of retargeting specifically. In this case, Husband Help Haven is neither the data controller nor the processor, so if you continue to see ads after opting out of retargeting, you are advised to opt-out of display ads through your Facebook account’s Ad Settings.

See this article for more information: https://www.facebook.com/help/109378269482053/?helpref=hc_fnav

How To Opt-Out

Please see our Cookies Policy for more information about opting out of retargeting.

We do our best to maintain parity between users who unsubscribe and users who do not with to be shown retargeting ads… In other words, when you unsubscribe, we will attempt to add you to an advertising exclusion list as detailed above.

Data Processing Purpose #4.
Product Sales, Delivery, On-boarding & Updates

This is going to be a really complicated way of saying that when you buy a product, Husband Help Haven will then deliver that product to you. A certain amount of data is required for that to happen. Your email address may also be used to deliver automated product support and updates for products you’ve purchased.

Data Collected

We require standard payment processing data to be submitted in order to process a payment. This includes:

  • Email address
  • Name
  • Card details (as the data controller, we only see the last four digits, expiration date, type of card such as MasterCard, and whether the CVC check passed)
  • Origin (i.e. country)
  • Other required billing information

We will then use this data to process your payment and deliver your product to you.

Third-Party Data Processors

  • PayPal
  • Stripe
  • SnappyCheckout
  • ActiveCampaign

Lawful Basis

Lawful basis for data processing for the purpose of product sales and delivery is contractual. If you purchase a product, it is my obligation to deliver access to that product, which requires data processing.

Lawful basis for product on-boarding and updates is legitimate interests. It is reasonable to expect that after purchasing a Husband Help Haven product, that you would like to receive future updates about changes or additions to that product. Contact support@husbandhelphaven.com for our Legitimate Interests Assessment for product on-boarding and updates.

Data Retention

Because Husband Help Haven offers lifetime updates on most of our products, sales data is kept indefinitely.

However, if at any time you would like your data to be removed, email support@husbandhelphaven.com.

How To Opt-Out

To opt-out of product updates or on-boarding, click the unsubscribe button which can be found at the bottom of every email you receive from Husband Help Haven.

You may also contact support@husbandhelphaven.com to be placed on our exclusion list or to have us unsubscribe you from product updates and on-boarding.

Data Processing Purpose #5.
Customer Support & Inquiries

Again, a short version is helpful. When you submit a support request, that requires an email address, which counts as data for the purposes of GDPR. I will then respond to that email and keep a record of your support request.

Data Collected

  • Name and email address
  • Any additional information willfully provided by the customer

Third-Party Processors Used

None.

Lawful Basis

Legitimate interests. If you send a customer support email or inquiry, you expect to receive customer support or for your question to be answered using the email and data you provided.

How To Opt-Out

N/A.
